We had a friend with us on Thursday morning, and with thunderstorms forecast for the afternoon, we thought to head out into the woods before they began. It is one of our favorite trails, and the first creek we cross has been without a bridge since the floods a year ago. To our surprise, there was a crew from the local college working on a replacement! Their temporary makeshift bridge was a picnic table, which, though we were prepared and more than willing to wade through the creek, offered a novel way to cross, so we took it...
Off they went, leaving me in the dust. It was glorious, knowing how happy they were to be running through the woods, hearing them call back to me once in a while to make sure I was following...
Once in a while I'd come across the three of them, waiting to show me a treasure, knowing I'd want to tuck it into my camera for future wondering...There was plenty of mud, poison ivy, and creeks to explore...
Many of the spring ephemerals are on their way out...the season is sooooo short, and alas, it feels as though summer is already here...but we saw a few withering trillium along the way.
The shouts echoed back to me after bouncing off of the hills across the lake - a TURTLE! a BIG BIG TURTLE!!! well, not so big, but a big discovery...By the time we returned to the trailhead, the bridge was finished, and to celebratory applause we were the first to cross!

Cool!!
Hooray for all sorts of bridges!
I'd be whooping over that turtle, too, you know-- turtles and frogs are what make the world go 'round in my book!
for me too stephanie...in fact i'd told them i was on the lookout for turtles and amphibians and they promised to help out...i'd say they did!
The trillium doesn't last long, but oh it is so beautiful when it is here. Love the turtle. And the picnic table bridge!
