The First Camping of the Year!!

Cousin Jessica joined us on a road trip to Indiana, to a spot halfway between us and Cousin Kelly in Wisconsin, where we met  Kelly and her boys and camped in a beautiful wooded spot west of Indianapolis.  We don't get to see these cousins and second cousins often enough, and it was a perfect way to spend a weekend in May...we learned how to put up tents with the help of several children...
We learned how to roll up the newspapers just so to add to the fire...
There was playing.
There was "rock club".
There were giggles and snuggles in the tent...
We wielded pie irons...
...made pizzas in the fire...
...and yes, s'mores, of course (who knew Kelly is the maker of the perfect golden marshmallow?)...
...and though we forgot the marshmallows and had to drive a ways to find replacements, and though it rained, and though it was so so hard to say goodbye, it was the perfect camping trip to start the season and leave us wanting to do it again and again and again...

Love love love camping too! I am curious about smores - how do you cook them without getting burnt?

What fun! And then it feels good to be back in your own bed doesn't it?

I'm so glad to learn that it was a successful trip and that you all got home safely!! Sorry about the rain, but it sounds as though you coped! Looks like a beautiful spot! I can almost smell the trees and the fire - wish I could taste the smores!! Love you!

gwynneth - our time-honored method of roasting marshmallows is to sharpen a found stick, spear the marshmallow on the end, and stick it over the fire! some of us are careful to only lightly brown it, leaving a soft gooey middle, and others of us enjoy the large flame, the yell, and the blowing-out of the flame, and the eating of the charred, yet still remarkably yummy remains. meanwhile you have assembled a graham cracker and a piece of chocolate and it is ready to go - we tend to sandwich the marshmallow between the pieces while it is still on the stick and squeeze it off in one go...GO TRY IT!!

Oh wow! I was lloking around camping shops for something to cook the whole thing in - was thinking a jaffle maker might work. I think I could manage that technique. Thanks for the tips!
