Postcards from Richmond

Oh dear.  How to sum up a really great roadtrip in one post???? I gotta, or I'll be so much further behind...please bear with me, and know that more bits of this week will pop up in later posts...The girls and I left Dan behind to write for his comprehensive exams - something that comes mid-PhD and must be completed before being considered a PhD "candidate", eligible to continue on to writing a dissertation (did I get that right?!).  I think he had a nice vacation without us, which he was certainly entitled to, and is sitting here with me finishing this portion of the exam.  We almost didn't go on this trip because, well, life is busy, we were just getting over being sick, and I'd never driven 7 hours by myself. Well, guess what? I did it!!! Twice!!

day one...
Dairy Bar milkshakes for breakfast with Marie
Roaming the James River, high with recent rains
 Making friends with whitewater kayakers...
...helping them into the water (have I mentioned that my kids are friendly???)
Early mornings with Scruggs...which leads us to...

day two...

We began by visiting the homeschooling coop we used to belong to, enjoying how much everyone has grown and yet is so much the same...and then to another dear friend's home.
to be welcomed warmly
to spend hours listening and being listened to
 and, on day three...
to be thoroughly entertained.

Awesome.
...and day four?   Day four will get its own post at some point, but here are a few glimpses...playing with flour, the making of bread, a tree, friends new and old, a few chickens...what a day.

I am so glad we went; friendships were renewed, memories created, new life shared...I came home happy to Be Home, but filled with the stuff of life so necessary to living.  Thank you, thank you, thank you...

Bravo!!!You accomplished so much in this trip - learning that you CAN drive long distances without a second driver (I've yet to do that!),showing your beautiful girls that true friends remain true friends,re-charging all sorts of batteries. The kids looked like they picked up where they left off 3 years ago. What a fantastic opportunity and what an awesome visit with dear friends who are more "family" than friends.I love you all - even you, Kimmy, Nancy, Marie and your families!!!

Mmmm, roadtrips are the greatest, aren't they??

And this one looks like an exceptionally fine one!

And congratulations on the big drive without mishap - now you know you can do it beautifully!

And one last thing - those "almost didn't go" 's... isn't it like that sometimes? We almost stay home (even for the day) just because we're grumpy or irritable or late or someone is complaining, or whatever... and then we just bite it and go!, and then we're sooo glad we did. :)
Love that.

What a beautiful trip you had. I always love reading about your road trips because they are so FULL. Ani and Eliza are so beautiful; so radiant and vibrant - it's such a joy to see them living life.

Oh - and I once drove from SW Ontario to New Brunswick all by myself - 18 hours. (It is indeed crazy and nothing I ever want to do again - but knowing that you can drive such distances and survive them is empowering.

Looking forward to hearing more about day Four! xo -Debbie
